Train Driver

Train Driver is a civilian transport job where you run train deliveries and passenger routes.

Train Driver station and train spawner
Train Driver station and train spawner.

How the job works

Train Driver is a Civilian job based on trains.

You can drive passenger trains or freight trains, depending on the train type you use. Passenger trips pay based on distance, not passenger count, while Freight trains carry resources to delivery points.

How to start

To start Train Driver:

  1. Go to any train station, or use /warpstation.
  2. Take the Train Driver job.
  3. Use the blue Train Spawner marker.
  4. Spawn a train and start a run.

At Level 10, you unlock:

  • /go train driver

Stations

You can use /warpstation with these station codes:

  • US for Unity Station
  • RC for Red County
  • LS for Linden Station
  • SRY for Sobell Rail Yards
  • YBS for Yellow Bell Station
  • BC for Bone County
  • CS for Cranberry Station
  • DO for Doherty Station
  • FC for Flint County
  • MA for Market Underground Station
  • TS for the tram station at King's, San Fierro

Train Types

Train Driver can use:

  • Tram
  • Streak
  • Freight

Tram

Tram is only in San Fierro.

It is used for short passenger transport.

Streak

Streak is used for long distance passengers.

Freight

Freight carries resources.

Freight resources include:

  • Oil
  • Gold
  • Iron
  • Chemicals
  • Electronics
  • Nitrous
  • Explosives
  • Engine Parts

How Passenger Routes Work

To transport passengers:

  1. Enter a Tram or Streak.
  2. Pick up passengers at the marker.
  3. Drive to the next destination marker.
  4. Drop them off.

Passenger pay depends on:

  • Distance

The Streak loop is Unity Station -> Linden Station -> Yellow Bell Station -> Cranberry Station -> Market Station -> Unity Station. Its five legs are 3,458, 1,947, 4,190, 3,151, and 1,101 to 1,106 metres. The same Tram or Streak leg can pay for 1 to 5 metres more or less from run to run.

A full Streak loop is about 13,850 metres. It gives about 13,850 progress and pays $86,005, or $103,204 with VIP. Runs take about 11 to 15 minutes. At about 11 minutes a loop, that is about $560,000 an hour with VIP, which is above the hourly earn limit of $540,000 with VIP.

The Tram runs one loop of 16 stops in San Fierro, in this order: Cranberry Station, Doherty, Garcia, King's, Calton Heights (four stops), Downtown (two stops), Financial, Calton Heights, Downtown (four stops), then Cranberry Station again. Its 16 legs are about 122 to 481 metres, and one full loop is about 4,101 metres. Recorded 16-stop rounds paid $70,776 and $70,887 before VIP.

How Freight Routes Work

To transport cargo:

  1. Enter a Freight train.
  2. Press N.
  3. Choose a resource.
  4. Load until Cargo Capacity reaches 500 / 500.
  5. Follow the markers to the delivery point and stop to unload.

The Freight loop is Red County -> Flint County -> Doherty -> Bone County -> Sobell Rail Yards -> Red County. Its five legs are 3,584, 1,748, 3,194, 2,041, and 1,749 metres. A Freight leg pays the same on every run. One full VIP loop gave $100,953.60 of resource value. Capacity is not the number of resource units paid; conversion depends on the chosen resource's value.

Freight units do not rise with the job level. For example, the first leg of the loop gave 29 Engine Parts, 599 Iron or 753 Nitrous, depending on the resource chosen. That leg gives 599 Iron with VIP and 499 Iron without VIP. Nitrous gives the most units, then Iron.

Speed and Fuel

While driving trains, watch:

  • Speed
  • Fuel

Important speed notes:

  • Slow below 30 KPH at passenger stops.
  • Slow to about 8 MPH for fuel, then stop and hold Space Bar at the fuel point.
  • Stay below 50 km/h in the red-lined non speeding areas.
  • Tram and Freight have a 160 kph speed limit; Streak has a 180 km/h limit. Exceeding the applicable limit can derail the train. Check the HUD's Speed limit: row and listen for the derail warning.
  • If the train derails, the mission fails and you restart from the loading point.

Refuelling costs $66.67 per percent of the tank: a 75% fill costs $5,000, and a full tank costs about $6,667.

The fine for speeding in a non speeding area is usually $5,000, though $2,000 to $4,000 base fines also occur. The first two fines within about 24 hours cost the base amount; the third costs twice the base, the fourth three times, and further fines keep increasing. Fines of up to $25,000 have been charged.

Skin

Train Driver uses these skin IDs:

  • 61
  • 1033

Pay facts

Branch Value
Tram passenger mode About $18.625 per hidden paid meter or progress unit
Streak passenger mode floor(shownDistanceMeters * 6.21)
Freight mode About $6.8308 per meter without VIP
VIP VIP applies at 1.2x

Cargo type does not change the Train Driver Freight total cash-equivalent value for the same trip. Job level does not increase Tram, Streak, or Freight pay; VIP adds 20%. Train Driver progress is paid distance in metres, not cash. The paid metres match the straight line between the two stops to within a few metres, so the pay is not for a longer route along the rails.

Streak passenger pay is floor(paid whole metres x 6.21). Tram pays 3 times that amount. With VIP, floor the result after multiplying by 1.2. Boarding-only stops can pay $0. On the Tram, the hidden paid distance can differ slightly from the visible marker.

After boarding, the game names the next stop and shows the distance in metres. The arrival message TRAIN DRIVER: You've successfully delivered the passengers and made $X. shows the pay before VIP.

Progression

Train Driver ranks are:

  • L0 Trainee Conductor, 0 progress units
  • L1 Graduated Conductor, 42,500 progress units
  • L2 Novice Conductor, 127,500 progress units
  • L3 Veteran Conductor, 255,000 progress units
  • L4 Professional Train Driver, 425,000 progress units
  • L5 Control Room Employee, 680,000 progress units
  • L6 Control Room Assistant Manager, 1,062,500 progress units
  • L7 Trains Engineer, 1,572,500 progress units
  • L8 Control Room Manager, 2,125,000 progress units
  • L9 Control Room Headmaster, 2,677,500 progress units
  • L10 CEO of Railways, 3,272,500 progress units

A full Streak loop gives 13,850 progress. At about 11 minutes per loop this is roughly 75,000 progress an hour, with about 236 loops needed for Level 10; actual runs can take 11 to 15 minutes. In single timed runs, a long Streak leg gave about 63,020 progress an hour, a Freight run about 55,614, and a full Tram route about 24,800. These are first estimates, not long-run averages.

Achievement

The Level 10 civilian achievement for Train Driver is:

  • Unstoppable

Reward:

  • $1,000,000

Job Notes

  • Train Driver can be started from any train station.
  • The blue Train Spawner marker is used to spawn your train.
  • Tram is only for San Fierro passenger transport.
  • Streak is for long distance passenger routes.
  • Freight is for resource transport.
  • Passenger routes and Freight routes work differently.
  • Speed and fuel both matter in this job.
  • At Level 10, you unlock /go train driver.

Related notes

  • Train Driver has a derail warning sound.

Rapid Transport restriction

Teleporting too far from the train abandons the mission. After leaving the train, return within 10 seconds.

Current train operation

Use the blue Train Spawner for Tram, Streak, or Freight. Tram and Streak transport passengers, while Freight carries Engine Parts, Iron, Explosives, Chemicals, Electronics, Oil, Gold, or Nitrous with a capacity of 500.

Passenger pay depends on distance, not passenger count. Slow below 30 KPH at passenger stops and below 50 km/h in a Non speeding area. Hold Space at a fuel point to refuel. Cruise control does not work on trains.

Leaving the train starts a 10 second return window. /traincarriages <count> changes the carriage count and has a 1 second cooldown.

Supplied trains and capacity

Tram, Streak, and Freight can all be used at Level 0 without VIP or courses. They are supplied through the blue Train Spawner marker. They cannot be bought and do not appear in F2. Streak carries up to 75 passengers, Tram carries up to 50, and Freight has a cargo capacity of 500.

Press 1 at the spawner to select Freight. Press N to change the selected payment resource. The Freight HUD shows loading progress up to 500 / 500 and the selected resource.

Letting players board

Press Space while driving your train to let passengers enter, the same way players board a Shamal.

Passenger display and derailment

On passenger runs, Boarded Passengers: <n> / <m> is separate from Passengers Capacity: <n> / 75. The boarding target is random, not determined by the stop, carriages or capacity.

Going faster than the train's limit can derail it: 160 kph for Tram and Freight, 180 km/h for Streak. Fuel level also limits speed: at 50% to 79% fuel the speed is capped at 120 km/h, and at 10% to 49% fuel it is capped at 50 km/h. The orange Restricted information line is shared Armed Robbery information, not train data.
