MTA:SA setup

MTA on Windows 7, 8, XP or Vista

MTA 1.6 has two installers: one for Windows 10 and 11, and one for Windows 7 and 8. MTA has announced that the next version, 1.7, will not run on Windows 7, 8 or 8.1. Windows XP and Vista already cannot run current MTA.

Steps

Try one step, then check whether the problem is still there. Follow any "only if" line before changing a setting.

  1. Windows 10 or 11: use the normal installer

Download MTA from the official site and run it. MTA's compatibility page says to use a supported version of Windows 10, and lists Windows 11 as working.

  2. Windows 7 or 8: use the second installer

MTA's troubleshooting guide lists a separate MTA 1.6 download for Windows 7 and 8.x next to the one for Windows 10 and 11. Use that one. The compatibility table shows MTA working on Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 and on Windows 8.1.

  3. MTA 1.7 will drop Windows 7 and 8

On 19 June 2026 the MTA team announced that the upcoming MTA 1.7 will not support Windows 7, 8 or 8.1, for security and operational reasons. It recommends moving to Windows 10 or later, or to Linux with Wine or Lutris. On 3 October 2026 MTA's site still offered the 1.6 installer for Windows 7 and 8.

  4. Windows XP or Vista: current MTA will not run

The compatibility page says 1.5.7 was the last version for XP and Vista, through a legacy build, and that MTA has not supported them since September 2019. It recommends moving to a newer Windows.

  5. Keep Windows updated

The client manual asks you to make sure Windows is fully up to date before looking for other causes.
