Vehicle Controls

These are the main controls and commands used while driving or riding in CIT. Changed binds can be checked in /settings > Binds or the MTA bind settings.

Quick controls

G Enters a vehicle as a passenger The MTA bind is enter_passenger.

K Toggles hazard lights The bind is Hazard Blinker Key.
Caps Lock Uses the Horn bind Hydraulics replaces the horn on vehicles that have it installed.

Hydraulics

Hydraulics costs $20,000 from Mod Shop > Chassis Upgrades > Hydraulics. All cars support it, but bikes and planes do not. It uses the vehicle's Horn bind, which is Caps Lock by default. Installing hydraulics replaces the normal horn.

Police sirens

In a Police vehicle, tap the Horn bind to toggle the siren and hold it to honk. The default is Caps Lock, and the MTA bind screen can also show H as an alternate key. Police Level 20+ can use /sirens to change the placement of visual siren lights. Firefighters can also use /sirens, as can Level 10 Paramedics in an Ambulance or Medic Car.

Default driving controls

Action Default control Notes
Enter as passenger G The bind is enter_passenger.
Toggle drive by RMB The bind is Driveby Toggle Key. Drivers cannot move while firing.
Previous or next drive by weapon Q or E Uses Driveby Previous Weapon Key and Driveby Next Weapon Key.
Motorbike wheelie Down Arrow Pulls the bike back.
Left blinker N Enable blinkers first with /toggleblinkers.
Right blinker M Enable blinkers first with /toggleblinkers.

Blinker keys can be changed in /settings > Binds by searching for blinker.

Ejecting passengers

Use /eject <seat|name> to remove a passenger, or /eject * for everyone except yourself, including glued players. Seats are 1 front right, 2 back left and 3 back right. A player you eject cannot re-enter or glue to that vehicle.

Engine state after selection

Normal owned vehicles are ready to drive after being picked or recovered. Use /engine when you want to turn the engine on or off manually.

Engine, cruise, and cockpit controls

  • /engine turns the engine on or off. Turning it off freezes the vehicle in place.
  • Drive by shooting works while cruise control is active. Cruise control is disabled during races.
  • With Adjust Cockpit View enabled in /settings, use Numpad 8 to move the cockpit view higher, Numpad 2 to move it lower, Numpad 4 and Numpad 6 to move it sideways, Numpad 7 to go straight and Numpad 1 to go behind. The setting is experimental and its default is No.

Hydraulics direction keys

With Hydraulics installed, hold Num 8 to raise the front, Num 2 to raise the back, Num 4 to raise the right side, or Num 6 to raise the left side. The Horn bind is normally Caps Lock, and hydraulics replaces the horn.

Motorbike acceleration and helmets

Motorbikes cannot use nitrous. Repeatedly press Up Arrow while accelerating to gain speed. Helmet display is automatic and can be changed with Players on bikes wear helmets and Helmet model under /settings > General > BIKE SETTINGS.

Detaching a trailer

Turn sharply left and right to detach a trailer.

Cruise and helicopter controls

Use /cruise <KPH> to set cruise control speed. Cruise Control Key toggles cruise control and defaults to C. To check or change that key, open /sbinds or /settings > Binds and find Cruise Control Key under Vehicle Binds.

Stand next to a helicopter and press your jump key twice (a double jump; RSHIFT by default) to grab onto it. Press Backspace to let go.

Certain helicopter pilots can use /drop <partial name> to drop one player, or /drop with no name to drop everyone. The occupants slide down ropes. /drop also lowers glued players slowly to the ground.

Drive by controls and lights

For drive by shooting, open /sbinds or /settings > Binds and look under Vehicle Binds:

  • Driveby Toggle Key: MOUSE2, the right mouse button, toggles drive by mode while in a vehicle.
  • Driveby Previous Weapon Key: Q switches to the previous drive by weapon.
  • Driveby Next Weapon Key: E switches to the next drive by weapon.

These are defaults. Check Key 1 and Key 2 for your current assignments.

Press L by default to toggle your vehicle lights on or off. To check or change the key, open /sbinds or /settings > Binds and find Vehicle Lights Key under Vehicle Binds.

An unwanted driver can press N by default to accept wanted level and allow a wanted passenger to enter or remain in the vehicle. Accepting gives the driver 20 Wanted Points; otherwise the passenger is ejected. To check or change the key, find Wanted Passenger Allow Key under Job / Activity Binds in /sbinds or /settings > Binds.

Firing from the driver seat

Press RMB while you are the driver or a passenger to toggle drive by mode. The bind is named Driveby Toggle Key, and its default is MOUSE2, the right mouse button. To check or change it, open /sbinds and find it under Vehicle Binds. Drivers cannot move the vehicle while firing.
