MTA:SA fix

CL13: GTA path contains unsupported (unicode) characters

MTA will not start because a folder name in your GTA San Andreas path has characters that are not standard ASCII. Move GTA to a plain path, then reinstall MTA.

The message

The path to your installation of GTA: San Andreas contains unsupported (unicode) characters. Please move your Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas installation to a compatible path that contains only standard ASCII characters and reinstall Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Codes on this page: CL13

Steps

  1. Look at every folder name in the GTA path

Look at the full path of your GTA San Andreas folder. MTA needs every character in it to be standard ASCII: the English letters A to Z and a to z, the numbers 0 to 9, the space and common symbols. Letters with accents (like é) and letters from other alphabets (like Π or Σ) are not ASCII.

  2. Move GTA to a plain folder path

Move your GTA San Andreas installation to a folder whose whole path has only standard ASCII characters. For example, MTA's manual gives C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\GTA San Andreas\ as the default GTA folder.

  3. Reinstall MTA and choose the new folder

The message says to reinstall Multi Theft Auto after the move. When the installer asks for the folder where San Andreas is installed, choose the new folder.

Worth knowing

MTA finds this by looking for replacement characters (?) in the GTA path it has saved.

Microsoft says ASCII is limited to the lowest 128 Unicode characters (U+0000 to U+007F).

A semicolon (;) in the MTA or GTA path is a different warning (CL15) with its own fix.

CIT's knowledge base gives the same advice: move GTA to a path with only standard ASCII characters, then reinstall MTA.

Still not fixed? Copy the whole message, not only the code, and check your log in the Fix tool. It is read on your own computer.
