CL33: Main file has an incorrect name

MTA stops at start because it was started from a program file that is not named Multi Theft Auto.exe. Press Retry, or start Multi Theft Auto.exe from the MTA folder yourself.

The message

Main file has an incorrect name

Codes on this page: CL33

Steps

  1. Press Retry

Press Retry in the Error box. MTA then opens Multi Theft Auto.exe from the MTA folder, if that file is there.

  2. Start Multi Theft Auto.exe yourself

Open the MTA folder in File Explorer and start Multi Theft Auto.exe from there. An MTA team member asked a player with CL33 to test exactly this.

  3. Reinstall MTA into the default folder

Reinstall MTA. When the installer asks for the folder, type the default installation folder yourself before you go on.

  4. Still CL33: scan for viruses

Only if CL33 comes back after the steps above.

Scan your PC with a good antivirus scanner. In a 2016 forum case, an MTA team member found that a virus had changed the path MTA was started from. That answer was about one player's PC.

Careful: Be careful with registry changes. The MTA team member said that fixing that registry value is tricky: if you do one thing wrong, no Windows program will start, not even regedit.

Worth knowing

An MTA team member explained CL33 in 2016: the MTA launcher was renamed to the file name shown in the message, which it should not be.

MTA checks that its program file is named Multi Theft Auto.exe.
