GTA San Andreas on PC

Controller not working in GTA San Andreas on PC

Single player: how well a controller works depends on your copy of the game. The Steam copy has controller support built in. For full support on other copies, PCGamingWiki points to the GInput mod.

Steps

  1. Set the game to Joypad

Open Options, then Controller Setup, and set Configuration to Joypad. The other choice there is Mouse + Keys.

  2. Know what your copy supports

PCGamingWiki says only the Steam copy has full controller support built in. XInput controllers, such as Xbox ones, work only partly in the Steam and Rockstar Launcher copies. The disc and 1.0 copies have basic support for older DirectInput controllers. PC Gamer reported that the 2014 Steam update added Xbox 360 controller support.

  3. Single player: GInput for full support

GInput, by SilentPatch's author, adds full Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 controller support, with the right button pictures and vibration. PCGamingWiki says it needs version 1.0 of the game and an ASI loader, Steam Input must be off for it, and PlayStation 4 and 5 controllers also need an XInput wrapper.

Careful: Single player only. Before you play MTA, MTA asks you to delete every .asi file from the GTA and MTA folders. Its own example is SilentPatch's file.

  4. In MTA: use MTA's controller settings

MTA only uses the first controller Windows knows about, and you set the buttons in the Binds tab of MTA's settings.
