MTA:SA fix

MTA crashes on Linux (Wine) when connecting or in basswma.dll

On Linux with Wine, MTA starts but crashes when you join a server, or crashes in basswma.dll while sound streams. MTA's Linux manual gives one workaround for each.

Steps

  1. Crash when connecting: change Wine's audio

Only if MTA crashes when you connect to a server.

Open Wine configuration (WineConfig) and go to the Audio tab. Untick ALSA and choose EsoundD. Save the settings and restart MTA. The manual says the audio server can cause this, maybe because of PulseAudio.

Careful: The whole Linux manual is marked Needs Checking, and it says MTA supports Linux only on a best-effort basis.

  2. Crash in basswma.dll: install Windows Media Player

Only if the crash names basswma.dll while audio is streaming.

Install Winetricks if you do not have it. Then run this command: winetricks -q wmp11. If that does not help, try the older version: winetricks -q wmp10.

Worth knowing

The manual says MTA support on Linux is best effort, and that you can run into a long list of issues.

With a 64-bit Wine prefix, the manual lists a libcef.dll crash when you join servers, or during play when the server uses CEF and your CEF web browser is on. The Linux fix explains how to make a 32-bit prefix.

The Linux and Lutris manuals also link a CEF workaround from MTA's GitHub issue #1000 (copy some CEF files). That issue was closed as completed in August 2020, so it is not a step here.

These steps come from a saved copy of MTA's Linux manual from 3 October 2026. We have not tested them on Linux ourselves.
