GTA San Andreas stretched picture, widescreen or missing resolution

Single player: the classic game stretches its picture on a wide screen, and a 2014 Steam update removed some big resolutions. Here is what the game offers and what fixes the rest.

Steps

1. Choose the resolution in the game

   Open Options, then Display, then Advanced, and pick your screen's resolution under Resolution. If yours is not in the list, see the third step.

2. Turn on Widescreen to stop the stretch

   In the same menu, set Widescreen to On. PCGamingWiki says this keeps the right shape, but it cuts off part of the view.

3. 1080p is missing on the Steam copy

   Only if your resolution is not in the list.

   PC Gamer reported in 2014 that a Steam update removed some large resolutions, 1080p among them. The Widescreen Fix in the next step unlocks every resolution, its release page says.

4. Single player: ThirteenAG's Widescreen Fix

   This free fix corrects the picture shape, the HUD and the field of view for wide and ultrawide screens. PCGamingWiki says it needs version 1.0 of the game and an ASI loader. Its release page strongly recommends SilentPatch with it.

   Careful: Single player only. Before you play MTA, MTA asks you to delete every .asi file from the GTA and MTA folders. Its own example is SilentPatch's file.

5. In MTA: use MTA's own settings

   MTA has its own Resolution and Aspect Ratio choices on the Video tab of its settings. The MTA resolution fix explains them.
