MTA:SA setup

Update MTA by hand on Linux (Lutris or Bottles)

On Lutris, MTA's own updater does not work, so you download the new MTA and install it in the same Wine prefix. On Bottles, run the new installer in the same bottle.

Steps

  1. Lutris: download the new installer yourself

    Only if you use Lutris.

The Lutris manual says updating MTA through the client itself does not work. Download the new MTA installer from mtasa.com, then follow the next two steps.

Careful: MTA's Lutris manual says its setup was tested with MTA 1.5.9.

  2. Lutris: add the fonts again (step 2 of the manual)

    Only if you use Lutris.

In Lutris, click Multi Theft Auto. On the bottom bar, open the Wine menu and choose Winetricks. Select the default wineprefix, choose Install a font, and tick Tahoma and Verdana.

  3. Lutris: run the installer in the same prefix (step 3 of the manual)

    Only if you use Lutris.

In Lutris, click Multi Theft Auto. On the bottom bar, open the Wine menu and choose Run EXE inside Wine prefix. Pick the new MTA installer you downloaded.

  4. Bottles: run the new installer in the same bottle

    Only if you use Bottles.

Download the new MTA installer. In Bottles, open the bottle where GTA and MTA are installed. Press the blue Run executable... button at the top and pick the new installer.

  5. Bottles: click through and start the new version

    Only if you use Bottles.

Click through the installer to the end. It takes the GTA path and settings from the MTA you already have. At the end, untick Run MTA:SA. Then start MTA from its MTA:SA shortcut in the bottle.

Worth knowing

When the Lutris manual installs MTA (its step 4), it unticks Install DirectX and Dedicated server.

To put a new major version, such as 1.7, next to 1.6 in Bottles, the manual says to first rename the old shortcut from Multi Theft Auto to Multi Theft Auto 1.6. If no shortcut for the new version appears after the install, add one and name it Multi Theft Auto 1.7.

These steps come from saved copies of MTA's Lutris and Bottles manuals of 3 October 2026.

We have not tested these steps on Linux ourselves. They are MTA's own instructions in shorter words.
