MTA:SA fix

A GTA:SA file is incorrect or missing (PakFiles.dat)

MTA will not start, and the file path under the message ends with PakFiles.dat, a GTA file that MTA checks. Run a full virus scan first, then install GTA San Andreas again from a trusted source.

The message

MTA:SA cannot launch because a GTA:SA file is incorrect or missing:

Steps

  1. Read the file path under the message

Under the message, MTA shows the path of a file. This fix is for the case where that path ends in audio\CONFIG\PakFiles.dat inside your GTA San Andreas folder.

  2. Make sure an anti-virus is running

If no anti-virus is running on your PC, install one. MTA's help page lists free ones: Bitdefender Antivirus Free, Avast Free Antivirus, AVG AntiVirus Free and Malwarebytes Free.

  3. Update it and scan the whole PC

Update your anti-virus and check that real-time scanning is on. Then run a complete virus scan of the computer.

  4. Install GTA again from a trusted source

Install GTA San Andreas again, from a copy you bought from a trusted source. MTA's help page links its 'Where to buy GTA:SA' page. If your copy is digital, install the latest MTA after you install the game.

Worth knowing

MTA's help page for this error is called 'PakFiles.dat Is Incorrect'. Its short description says the game's audio/CONFIG/PakFiles.dat was tampered with (changed).

MTA compares the file's hash (a kind of fingerprint) with one fixed value. If the file has changed, the check fails.

MTA uses the same message for another check, on GTA's eax.dll, ogg.dll, vorbis.dll and vorbisFile.dll. That check opens a different help name (gendep_error), and MTA's help site had no page for it on 23 October 2026. If the path under the message ends with one of those files, this fix is not written for that case.

A similar message says an MTA:SA file (not a GTA:SA file) is incorrect or missing. That is a different check, and MTA sends it to its Data Files Missing page.

Still not fixed? Copy the whole message, not only the code, and check your log in the Fix tool. It is read on your own computer.
